Ingredient Substitutions
Tomato Sauce: Blend diced canned tomatoes or use fresh pureed tomatoes if tomato sauce is unavailable.
Tomato Paste: Essential for thickness—avoid omitting for optimal texture.
Oregano/Italian Seasoning: Fresh herbs may be used in place of dried; start with smaller quantities if a milder flavor is desired.
Garlic Salt: Substitute with an additional ¼ teaspoon garlic powder and ½ to 1 teaspoon sea salt.
Sugar: May be replaced with honey or left out; enhances tomato flavor and mellows acidity.
Storage
Refrigerate: Keep in an airtight container for up to two weeks; allow to come to room temperature before use.
Freeze: Store in a sealed container for up to two months.
Tip
To avoid staining light-colored utensils, use a red spatula or stainless steel spoon when preparing this sauce.
