Easy Baked Apples

These warm, cinnamon-scented baked apples offer a delightfully simple alternative to traditional apple pie. By halving the apples before baking, the dish allows for an extra generous amount of topping, enhancing both texture and flavor.

Total Time: 1 hour 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup 84g old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 3 medium firm sweet apples (e.g., Honeycrisp or Fuji)
  • 8 tablespoons 113g unsalted butter
  • 1/8 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 3/4 cup 98g all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup 100g brown sugar, plus 1 tablespoon separated
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon divided
  • Vanilla ice cream and homemade caramel sauce optional for serving

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a baking dish, large enough to accommodate six apple halves, using butter or a non-stick spray.
  • Slice each apple vertically into halves and remove the core, seeds, and stem using a spoon.
  • Place the apple halves in the prepared baking dish with the cut side facing upward.
  • Sprinkle the halved apples with 1 tablespoon of brown sugar and 1/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon.
  • In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter, then remove from heat. Stir in the flour, oats, remaining 1/2 cup brown sugar, the other 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon, and sea salt to form the crumble topping.
  • Spoon and lightly press the topping over each apple half.
  • Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and continue baking for 20 to 30 minutes more, until the apples are tender and the topping has turned golden brown.
  • Serve warm, optionally topped with vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce.

Notes

These baked apples are best served warm but can be stored and reheated for enjoyment later. The optional toppings enhance the dessert experience but are entirely up to preference.
